Career Pathways

Our curricular pathways empower students to self-direct their learning by making course choices to fit their areas of interest and career goals. Each pathway is designed around a broad area of focus:

  • Performing and Visual Arts

  • STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)

  • Humanities

  • Entrepreneurship

(Pathways have been designed based on student survey data over the past decade regarding students’ interests and career aspirations.)

Electives are designed to support career-readiness and teach specific skills needed. Juniors and Seniors benefit from individualized offerings like internships, virtual mentors or online classes.

Students are asked to select a pathway by the end of their freshman year, but anyone can change pathways as interests change. The pathways are designed to make sure that students are getting their required credits for graduation no matter which pathway they choose. They appeal to many different types of students, and we have created new classes specifically for these pathways that strengthen their relationship to the themes.

Community Support

In addition to the pathways, Ferndale High School has entered into new relationships and strengthened existing relationships with outside organizations that provide area high school students with non-traditional courses of study, including the Oakland Technical Campus and Oakland Community College, expanding our facilities and teaching resources for every student.

FMS Students Learn About Cutting Edge Manufacturing

Story courtesy of Pathway X Events:

October is Manufacturing Month - a month to celebrate modern manufacturing packed with open houses, programs, and outreach meant to inspire the next generation of workers in this high demand industry.  Pathway X Events and Ferndale Public Schools brought this home to over 160 8th and 9th grade students on October 9th with a field trip showcasing the many types of manufacturing right in their own neighborhood. The students spent the morning in small groups, traveling by foot to local manufacturing business, connecting with professionals in seven career path categories, and engaging in hands-on learning at every stop. Twenty-five upperclassmen from Ferndale High School spent the morning as peer-mentors in the groups and engaging the 8th & 9th graders at the activity stations.

Principal's Corner

Principal Lisa Williams

Greetings Ferndale Families and Friends,

Welcome to the opening of what promises to be a wonderful school year! This is a time of great anticipation of what is to come, and I am excited to re-introduce myself as the new principal of Ferndale High School. My name is Lisa Williams. I most recently served as the principal of Lincoln Middle School in the Van Dyke Public School District. Before that, I served as an Educational Improvement Consultant with Wayne RESA. I worked specifically with Priority Schools in Wayne County where I provided professional development and consulting services in the area of school improvement. Prior to that, I worked in the Ferndale Public School District for eight years. The first five years I served as the Assistant Principal of Ferndale High School and Principal during my last three.  I also taught English Language Arts for eight years at the high school level. I am truly honored to have the opportunity to come back home and be part of the wonderful Ferndale School community and Ferndale High School family.
