Ferndale High School
The Ferndale secondary schools campus offers the small community feel and personalized attention for which Ferndale Schools is famous. Students have access to integrated STEM electives and our top-ranked IMPI Robotics team. We offer over 20 AP courses, award-winning music, drama and art classes, and more opportunities for enrichment at the Center for the Advanced Studies and the Arts (CASA). Students enjoy 17 FREE varsity sports! And now, through our Early College program, students can graduate high school with a FREE associate’s degree.
Our curricular pathways empower students to self-direct their learning by making course choices to fit their areas of interest and career goals. Each pathway is designed around a broad area of focus:
Performing and Visual Arts
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)
(Pathways have been designed based on student survey data over the past decade regarding students’ interests and career aspirations.)
Electives are designed to support career-readiness and teach specific skills needed. Juniors and Seniors benefit from individualized offerings like internships, virtual mentors or online classes.
Students are asked to select a pathway by the end of their freshman year, but anyone can change pathways as interests change. The pathways are designed to make sure that students are getting their required credits for graduation no matter which pathway they choose. They appeal to many different types of students, and we have created new classes specifically for these pathways that strengthen their relationship to the themes.
In addition to the pathways, Ferndale High School has entered into new relationships and strengthened existing relationships with outside organizations that provide area high school students with non-traditional courses of study, including the Oakland Technical Campus and Oakland Community College, expanding our facilities and teaching resources for every student.

Ferndale orchestra teacher Ben Moy was named Teacher of the Year for District 4 by the Michigan School Band & Orchestra Association (MSBOA). Fittingly, Moy, who also swings a mean lightsaber, learned he had received the award on May 4th (May the 4th Be With You), also known as international Star Wars Day.
Congratulations, Ben. We're so glad you have been recognized outside the district for the amazing work we have grown to appreciate over the years.
We are proud to announce that Ferndale Schools has 8 students who have been selected to perform as part of the Oakland University Honors Orchestra weekend Nov. 11-13, 2016. The students will work with Alan McNair and perform two movements from the Tchaikovsky Serenade for Strings as well as the Overture to "Candide" with wind and percussion players from the Oakland Symphony. It is a very exciting opportunity for these students. The students who are participating are:
- Katie Keener
- William McElgunn
- Anabel Sicko
- Jacob Keener
- Rachel Arquero
- Margaret Dominic
- George Van Der Vennet
- Kita Van Der Vennet
Congratulations to the FHS Golden Eagle Marching who won their second straight state championship at the The Michigan Competing Band Association Championships this past Saturday at Ford Field in Detroit.
This title bolsters the already overflowing trophy case for the Golden Eagles, as it was the 9th State Championship for the storied program. In addition to taking first place in Flight IV the Golden Eagles also took home all three caption awards; Outstanding Music Performance, Outstanding Visual Performance, and Outstanding General Effect.
“While it is wonderful for the band to have earned their 9th State Championship in the last 13 years, I am particularly proud of this year’s band because over 1/3 of the entire band are first year marchers, and yet the group as a whole ‘showed up for work’ every rehearsal and got incrementally better each time. That’s hard for any group to do, even far more experienced bands,” said Marching Band Director Elon Jamison.
The competition was tough for the Golden Eagles, but they won Flight IV with a total score of 91.65, besting the second place Newaygo, who finished with a score of 89.875.
A huge shout out to all of the parents and marching band boosters for their tireless work in support of the marching band.
A special thank you to the Golden Eagle Marching Band Facebook page for providing these outstanding images! Check out the page for more great images and video:
Greetings Ferndale Families and Friends,
Welcome to the opening of what promises to be a wonderful school year! This is a time of great anticipation of what is to come, and I am excited to re-introduce myself as the new principal of Ferndale High School. My name is Lisa Williams. I most recently served as the principal of Lincoln Middle School in the Van Dyke Public School District. Before that, I served as an Educational Improvement Consultant with Wayne RESA. I worked specifically with Priority Schools in Wayne County where I provided professional development and consulting services in the area of school improvement. Prior to that, I worked in the Ferndale Public School District for eight years. The first five years I served as the Assistant Principal of Ferndale High School and Principal during my last three. I also taught English Language Arts for eight years at the high school level. I am truly honored to have the opportunity to come back home and be part of the wonderful Ferndale School community and Ferndale High School family.
