Roosevelt Primary School About Us

Brain Based Learning

Roosevelt has a strong core curriculum, and the staff at Roosevelt continues to learn about how the young child’s brain develops. Teachers know that students need different ways to learn through visual, auditory, kinesthetic and tactile experiences. It is important to make sure there is a variety of activities in order to meet the needs of each learner.

All learners (including adults) need time to stand up, stretch and move. Throughout the day teachers incorporate movement and music activities to allow children important gross motor movement to activate different parts of the brain.

Our physical education teacher incorporates the work of Dr. Bob Sornson and Jean Blades-Madigan (Action Based Learning) into daily activities allowing children to develop essential gross motor skills needed to help academic success.

Roosevelt also has a SAFE room that may be used by anyone, but is used frequently for those students who need to be able to calm down due to sensory overload or need to wake up and alert the body so that learning can occur. The SAFE room stands for Sensory, Appropriate, Fun and Effective. Equipment in the room includes a small trampoline, therapy balls, balance boards, and other activities associated with brain based learning.
