Academics

National Honors Society (NHS)

The National Honor Society is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since their beginnings in 1921 and 1929. Membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service. Students are selected for NHS Membership based on academic performance and faculty recommendation. (www.nhs.us)

Student Council

UHS Student Council Membership is open to all students beginning in 9th grade. The Student Council works to engage students in learning about democracy and leadership, by helping students to share their ideas, interests, and concerns with faculty and school administration. Student Council members raise funds for school-wide activities, including social events, community projects, helping people in need and school reform. The Student Council plans and executes the UHS Welcome Back Week events, Homecoming, and Grammy Night.

Classes on WSU Campus

All UHS seniors take classes on campus at Wayne State University in the heart of Detroit. This unique opportunity allows all of our students to experience campus life and prepare for the next step in their education. Buses leave from UHS and return students to our home campus, so there's no inconvenience for parents.

Picture Perfect (Yearbook & Multimedia)

The UHS Picture Perfect Team documents and records life at UHS through photos and video. Every year, Picture Perfect creates and sells the UHS Yearbook and Senior Videos including highlights from activities throughout the year. Student Members of Picture Perfect attend UHS activities and sporting events to capture all the important moments of the UHS school year. Students learn the fundamentals of digital photography including composition and lighting, use state of the art photography equipment and ‘green screen' technology, and learn the basics of desktop publishing.

Innovative Vehicle Design (IVD)

University High School students, with the guidance of UHS Faculty, design and build small electric vehicles for an annual competition at Michigan International Speedway. The competition is sponsored by UHS Industry Partner, the Square One Education Network. The UHS team has a decade long tradition of bringing home awards from the annual competition held on the first weekend in May. IVD emphasizes innovation, rather than competition and teaches students engineering and fabrication fundamentals while engaging them in a hands-on project based experience.

Robotics & Web Design

University High's Get It! (Girls Exploring Together Information Technology) Students compete at Robofest each year and have brought home many medals! The team was piloted and is sponsored by UHS industry partner, Michigan Council of Women in Technology (MCWTF).

Girl Talk

This group allows our young ladies to meet with adult adivsors and mentors to discuss the issues that they face every day.  The program is cooperatively run with the Abayomi Community Center.  The young ladies participate in books studies, discussions, and activities during monthly after school meetings.

Art Club

The UHS Art Club provides a structured time and place for students to be creative and explore different art techniques.  Students were introducted to an array of drawing techniques, produced numerous watercolor projects, optic art, and sculpture. The UHS art club is a weekly, after-school club that aims to continue to grow in student members and experiences!
