Marching Band Wraps Winning Season with Silver Medal
The Ferndale HS Golden Eagle Marching Band had a very successful conclusion to their 2023 competitive season at Ford Field this past Saturday afternoon, winning the Silver Medal in the Michigan Competing Bands Association (MCBA) State Championship contest, with a score of 82.35.
This success followed their win at MCBA Prelims the previous week at Okemos HS, and 3 successful invitational performances where they consistently won first place and all caption awards. They also performed at every FHS home football game, supporting the team and the community, and in the Ferndale Homecoming Parade.
Their training began in early May, with rehearsals throughout the summer and their annual trip to Band Camp at the Interlochen Center for the Arts in August. The band is comprised of 90 members grades 8-12, and includes 42 first-time members and 17 seniors.
Their program was entitled ||: and again :|| and featured music by Coldplay, Beethoven, Dr. Dre, The Weeknd, Lizzo, Pachelbel, and Daft Punk.

The first meeting of the Crochet and Knitting Club at Ferndale High School took place this week. Students of all skill levels came together to explore fiber arts. The club is open to all students and has the goal of eventually creating pieces to be donated to charity organizations in our community.
Today, we celebrated Classgiving—an annual tradition that allows Adult Transition students to contribute something extra to their school family. With some support from Adult Transitions Teacher Danny Collins and Joe Altizer, the students shop for all of the ingredients, cook the food for the feast, and serve it to friends and classmates. This tradition is over 10 years old, and we are so proud of our Self Contained students for putting this event on every year.
This past weekend, the Student Enterprise Theatre presented three great performances of Puffs with wonderfully receptive audiences. Several audience members commented on how much they liked the play itself for it's humourous tone and how impressed they were with the talent in the cast. Highlights of the cast were several FMS students taking on large roles, including Zoe Frappier, Zoe Erskine, Lauren McMiller, Malia Ajonuma, Lucie Bisha, Maisy Russell, Lu Kaiser and Piper Stoll. The lights and sound design by Seth Amadei were also very well received.
If you were unable to catch Puffs, save the date for the spring musical, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Performance dates will be March 9–17, 2024. Auditions will be held December 13 and 14 and are open to all FHS and FMS students.
Students from FHS, UHS, and TCEC attended the Southeast MiCareer Quest event last Tuesday held annually at Suburban Showplace in Novi. Employers and training institutions from around Michigan provided students with hands on experiences in four career quadrants including Advanced Manufacturing, Healthcare, Construction and Information Technology. Students tried out new technology, asked questions and participated in computerized and VR simulations. Students learned about possible career pathways and opportunities in their areas of interest.
On Saturday Nov 18, Quinn LaTosch drove the Oakland Schools Technical Campus Southeast (OSTC-SE) robotics team to victory in the Oakland County Competitive Robotics Association (OCCRA) finals. The OSTC-SE team was in alliance with team 7692, the Beach Bums from AGBU Manoogian High School, to take the victory. The Oakland County Competitive Robotics Association is a full-contact robotics competition; students built and controlled 120 pound robo-gladiators that placed 9” tennis balls in a central goal while opponents tried to stop them. OCCRA robots are entirely student designed and built, seperating them from the FIRST robotics competition program. The rules of the competition allow for and encourage corporation partnerships but will not allow precise machining or processes that cannot be carried out in the schools. Quinn also participates in the OSTC-SE FIRST Robotics team.
