FERNDALE, Mich. — Ferndale Upper Elementary music teacher Charissa Duncanson returned to Nashville, Tennessee, on Oct. 7 to help celebrate the Country Music Association (CMA) Foundation's 10th anniversary of the Music Teacher of Excellence Award. Duncanson returned as a Legacy honoree two years after becoming the first Michigan teacher to receive the national award.
The CMA Foundation named Duncanson a Music Teacher of Excellence in 2024, recognizing her work as a music educator and her commitment to her students. The award included $5,000 for her classroom, along with opportunities for professional learning and connections with fellow educators. This year’s anniversary celebration brought together current and past award recipients, all music educators from across the country, to celebrate the impact of music education.
“One of the most meaningful parts of the experience was being surrounded by music educators from across the country who share a deep commitment to making music education meaningful and accessible for all students,” Duncanson said. “Being invited back to Nashville as a CMA Music Teacher of Excellence Legacy this October made that recognition even more special.”
At FUEL, the award has made a direct difference for students. Duncanson used the $5,000 to purchase instruments so students no longer have to share, giving every student one-to-one music-making opportunities.
“This recognition has encouraged me to continue creating a music room where every student feels seen, valued and empowered to share their voice,” Duncanson said. “My biggest goal is for my students to know that they each bring unique gifts to our classroom and that their contributions matter.”
Duncanson said the honor has reinforced her commitment to being the teacher she needed as a student, while keeping her focused on making sure every student experiences the joy and belonging that music making can offer.
