Ryan Smith Flower Principal

FERNDALE, Mich. — Ferndale Public Schools is pleased to announce the appointment of Ryan Smith as the new principal of Ferndale Lower Elementary School. Smith will officially begin his new role Monday, Aug. 3, 2026.

Entering his 20th year in education, Smith brings nearly two decades of experience as a teacher and elementary school leader. Throughout his career, he has remained committed to creating inclusive, student-centered learning communities where every child is known, valued and empowered to succeed.

“We are excited to welcome Mr. Smith to Ferndale Public Schools,” said Camille Hibbler, superintendent of Ferndale Public Schools. “His experience, collaborative leadership style and commitment to educational equity align strongly with the values of our district and the needs of the Ferndale Lower community. We look forward to the relationships he will build with our students, staff and families as he leads the school into its next chapter.”

Smith began his career as a teacher in Detroit before joining Novi Community School District, where he was recognized as Elementary Teacher of the Year. He later served as an elementary school principal in Swartz Creek Community Schools and Huron Valley Schools.

As a school leader, Smith has focused on cultivating strong relationships, implementing restorative practices, advancing educational equity and supporting the development of the whole child. His commitment to equity and community impact also earned him recognition as an Oakland Together 40 Under 40 honoree.

Smith earned a bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan University, a master’s degree from Michigan State University and an Education Specialist degree from Wayne State University. He also holds a Certificate in School Management and Leadership from Harvard University.
