FERNDALE, Mich. — Ferndale Public Schools is proud to spotlight Kory Woods, a Ferndale High School Class of 2004 graduate whose work in journalism, entrepreneurship and community service continues to make an impact across Michigan.
Since graduating from Ferndale, Woods has been a Detroit Lions beat writer for MLive.com, providing in-depth coverage of one of the state’s most passionate professional sports communities. Previously, he covered the Detroit Pistons for MLive and University of Michigan athletics for another outlet.
“Attending Ferndale High School had a lasting impact on how I navigate the world,” Woods said. “It was a true melting pot of people from different races, religions and backgrounds. That experience exposed me to different perspectives and helped shape the person I am today.”
A graduate of Eastern Michigan University with a bachelor’s degree in media studies and journalism, Woods also earned a Master of Social Work from the University of Michigan. In addition to his journalism career, he owns a photography and videography company and volunteers with Michigan Action Plan, Father Involvement, a nonprofit focused on strengthening fathers’ involvement in their children’s lives.
His work has earned recognition from the Michigan Chronicle and Oakland County Executive’s Office, both of which named him to their 40 Under 40 lists. He also received the Society of Professional Journalists Detroit Chapter’s first-place Excellence in Journalism Award for a story about the lifelong bond among three Detroit Lions players.
During his time at Ferndale High School, Woods was active in the Black History Club and served as vice president during his senior year. He was also named Ferndale Youth Assistance’s Volunteer of the Year in 2004.
Woods credits the school’s diverse community, the Skyline Trip, and relationships with educators, including Ms. Jones and former Principal Mr. Ivory, with helping shape his path.
Ferndale Public Schools celebrates Woods for using storytelling to inform, connect and uplift communities while continuing to represent the Ferndale spirit with pride.
