FERNDALE, Mich. — Ferndale Public Schools’ Drone Apprenticeship Program is giving students hands-on STEM learning, industry-recognized credentials, competitive experience and paid workforce opportunities.
The program served 21 middle school students, who completed more than 160 hours of training. Students competed in three drone races, earned $300 in prize money, constructed 30 land drones and earned 15 T.R.U.S.T. drone safety certifications. Two students also qualified to participate in the National Championships in Austin, Texas.
“The Drone Apprenticeship Program demonstrates what is possible when relevant learning, strong mentorship, community partnership and real-world opportunities come together,” said Camille Hibbler, superintendent of Ferndale Public Schools. “Our students are building technical skills, confidence, leadership experience and a clearer connection between their learning and future careers.”
At the high school level, 15 students completed more than 200 hours of training. Students earned Lean Six Sigma, T.R.U.S.T. safety and Google Data Analytics certifications while gaining real-world experience through drone filming crews, race-day event management and supervised flight projects.
More than $5,000 was paid directly to participating high school students in wages, and between three and six students secured summer employment opportunities, according to the program’s impact report.
Since the completion of the impact report, students have continued participating in summer competitions. Coach Darryl Bingham will provide the Board of Education with additional information about student accomplishments and the continued growth of the program.
Ferndale Public Schools also recognizes Ferndale Youth Assistance and Jessie Wallace for their partnership and support. Their commitment has helped create opportunities for students to develop skills, explore emerging career pathways and represent Ferndale in competitive settings.
The district will continue monitoring student participation, certifications, competition results, employment opportunities and workforce exposure while identifying ways to sustain and expand the program through district support, grants, workforce partnerships and community collaboration.
