PAC provides resources, connection and support for families of students receiving special education services
FERNDALE, Mich. — Ferndale Public Schools is inviting families to discover a valuable resource within the district: the Parent Advisory Committee (PAC), a group dedicated to connecting and supporting families of students receiving special education services.
Throughout the 2026-27 school year, PAC will host a series of in-person and virtual meetings designed to help parents and caregivers learn more about special education, connect with other families, access resources and strengthen their partnership with Ferndale Public Schools.
The first meeting of the school year will be held Tuesday, Sept. 22, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Ferndale High School. Dinner and childcare will be provided for families attending in person.
“Families are some of our most important partners in helping students thrive,” said Alisha Byrd, Director of Special Education for Ferndale Public Schools. “PAC gives parents and caregivers a place to build relationships, learn about the resources available to their children and connect with others who may be navigating similar experiences.”
A resource for Ferndale families
PAC is about more than attending meetings. It provides another avenue for families to better understand special education programs, services and processes while creating a community where parents and caregivers can learn from and support one another.
Through PAC, families have opportunities to learn about district and community resources, hear information relevant to students receiving special education services, ask questions, share perspectives and become more informed advocates for their children.
No previous PAC involvement or special education expertise is necessary to participate.
2026-27 PAC meetings
Following the Sept. 22 kickoff, meetings are scheduled throughout the school year on Oct. 27, Nov. 17, Dec. 15, Jan. 26, Feb. 23, March 23, April 27 and May 25.
Most in-person meetings are held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Ferndale High School, with dinner and specialized childcare provided. The Jan. 26 and Feb. 23 meetings will be held virtually via Zoom from 6-7:30 p.m. The Dec. 15 date is tentatively planned as a holiday gathering.
