Six students will bring student perspectives to the Board of Education; applications are due Friday, Oct. 16
FERNDALE, Mich. – Ferndale Public Schools is accepting applications for Student Board Representatives. The six students chosen will serve on the Board of Education and share student perspectives with district leadership. Applications are open to students at Ferndale High School, University High School and Tri-County Educational Center (TCEC), and are due Friday, Oct. 16.
The program gives students a formal voice in district decision-making. It helps the Board’s conversations reflect what students actually experience in Ferndale’s schools. Student representatives act as liaisons between the Board and the students at their schools. They bring student feedback to the Board and report the Board’s discussions and actions back to their classmates.
The district will select six representatives:
Ferndale High School: one junior and one senior
University High School: one junior and one senior
TCEC: two student representatives
What student representatives do
Student representatives attend the Board’s Committee of the Whole and Regular meetings, typically the first and third meetings of each month while school is in session. They review board materials before each meeting and participate in board discussions. During the “Student Representative Report” on each agenda, they report on student activities, topics, and concerns. Board mentors meet with the representatives each quarter to support them in the role. Students may receive .5 elective credit for each semester of successful service.
Students do not need a formal leadership title to apply. The district especially encourages applications from students whose voices are not always centered in traditional leadership roles. Reviewers will look for students who are thoughtful, reliable, comfortable sharing both positive feedback and areas for improvement, and able to commit to evening board meetings.
