FERNDALE, Mich. — Ferndale High School alumnus Quinn Wright, class of 1999, is the latest graduate featured in Ferndale Public Schools’ Alumni Spotlight series, which celebrates the careers and community impact of Ferndale Eagles.
After years as a financial planner, Wright recently launched his own business, Quinn Wright Financial Planning Services. He also serves on the Madison Heights City Council. When he was sworn in in December 2021, he became the city's first Black council member. Voters elected him to a full four-year term in 2023.
Wright studied advertising at Michigan State University, where he served as student body president. He is raising three daughters, volunteers in his community and is an advocate for small businesses across Southeast Michigan.
At Ferndale High School, Wright sat out his junior football season because of a heart condition. He was cleared to return for his senior year. Along the way, he found other ways to lead, joining the Golden Eagles Marching Band drum line and student government.
“I think the heart issue truly taught him that there are more doors that’ll open when one closes, and he has made the most of that,” said Lisa Koivu, who nominated Wright for the Alumni Spotlight.
"The lessons I learned in student government, marching band and athletics at Ferndale planted the seeds of leadership that have guided me throughout my life," said Wright. "Those lessons, and the friendships I made, helped carry me to where I am today."
Wright encouraged current students to get involved. "Take full advantage of the opportunities to learn, grow and connect through the programs at FHS," said Wright. "You never know where they might take you."
“Quinn shows our students that leadership can grow out of setbacks,” said Superintendent Camille Hibbler. “From the drum line at Ferndale High to the council chambers in Madison Heights, he has spent his life showing up for his community.”
The Alumni Spotlight series highlights Ferndale High School and University High School graduates making a difference as entrepreneurs, educators, artists, health care professionals, public servants, military members, and community leaders. Alumni can share their own story or nominate a fellow graduate on the Alumni Spotlight form.
