FERNDALE, Mich. — Seventy-five Ferndale Middle School students spent two days exploring robotics, artificial intelligence, digital music and other emerging technologies this summer through Geek Squad Academy, an interactive STEM experience made possible by an $80,000 grant from the Summer Discovery Program, also known as Discover Works.
Hosted in partnership with Best Buy, the academy transformed classrooms into hands-on learning spaces where students became "Junior Agents," using technology to create, collaborate and solve real-world challenges.
"I love seeing our students get excited about learning in new ways," said Superintendent Camille Hibbler. "Experiences like Geek Squad Academy give them the chance to try things they may have never been exposed to before and discover what they're capable of. That's what we want for every student at Ferndale: opportunities that inspire them, challenge them and help them see what's possible for their future."
Students participated in six interactive learning sessions, including robot wrangling, game design, digital music, stop-motion animation, 3D design and AI WHY. Throughout the experience, they strengthened their critical thinking, creativity, communication, and problem-solving skills while gaining exposure to career pathways in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Geek Squad Academy was led by Geek Squad professionals and Best Buy team members, who introduced students to technology through project-based learning designed to build confidence, encourage creativity and demonstrate how technology can be used both in school and in future careers.
"Our goal is to expose students to experiences that expand what's possible for their future," said Michael Turner, secondary summer school coordinator. "When students can code a game, build a robot, create digital music or experiment with artificial intelligence, they're not just learning technology; they're discovering talents they may not have known they had. This partnership gave our students an incredible opportunity to see themselves as innovators, creators and future leaders in STEM."
Ferndale Public Schools was among a select group of districts chosen to receive the competitive grant, giving 75 middle school students access to an educational experience valued at approximately $80,000.
Geek Squad Academy is designed to show students that they do not have to wait until college or the workforce to begin exploring careers in technology. Through hands-on projects and mentorship from technology professionals, students gain practical experience while developing confidence in their abilities.
The academy showcases Ferndale Public Schools' ongoing dedication to expanding access to innovative educational opportunities through partnerships with industry leaders and community organizations. By connecting students with emerging technologies and real-world applications, the district continues to prepare learners with the skills needed to thrive in an increasingly technology-driven world.
